Zebra Mice Rehomed and Sanctuary

Zebra Mice are often handed in to Crittery due to both their nervous disposition and their specialised needs. They are harder to keep than Fancy Mice and are often sold in pet shops without suitable guidance being given to their new owners.

Many Zebra mice come to us with injured tails, as they are very prone to fighting in overcrowded or stressful situations. They do need a quiet and large environment, with plenty of enrichment to avoid stress and fighting.

Further Details

Zebra Mice rarely bite but are fast and difficult to handle. They are mostly shy and do not tame well though some can become tame with patience and time. A few examples of the cases we have helped with over the years:

  • Roxy and Pizzazz were a pair of young females who had been kept in crowded conditions and so had fought and lost the tips of their tails.
  • Stripes was a very shy young boy who came to us when their owner stopped keeping exotics. Once introduced to new friends he become much more confident with his new owner.
  • Blackberry came to us from a breeder. He was very shy but improved upon introducing to a group of female fancy mice, a good option for zebra mice that cannot get on with their own kind since these cannot interbeed. The group was rehomed together to an experienced home.
  • Our most recent arrivals, a pair of boys came into Crittery from a rescue that was closing during the first UK lockdown. These boys have remained in Sanctuary due to our lockdown hiatus on rehoming and their age.
